Heritage Food Walk
Zakaria Street tells its story through food, where every flavour carries echoes of the past. Photo: Avishek Mitra.
The street comes alive especially in the evenings, drawing crowds for its kebabs, biryani, nihari and desserts that have been passed down through generations.
Historically, Zakaria Street grew as a hub for migrant communities and traders, and its food culture evolved alongside its people. Many of its food stalls and small kitchens are family-run, with recipes rooted in memory and tradition. Over time, the street has emerged not just as a place to eat, but as a living archive of Kolkata’s layered culinary history.

Gatha – Tales of India will organise its first Heritage Food Walk in Kolkata on Zakaria Street on Feb 1, 2026. The event aims to explore the street’s culinary legacy, where flavours, memories, and everyday life intersect.
Event Details:
Date : 1st February, 2026 (Sunday)
Time : 6-8 pm IST
Venue : Zakaria Street (Kolkata, West Bengal)
Registration Amount : Depending on the Menu options. Your registration amount includes your portions of the food and mementoes. If you wish to purchase anything out of the fixed menu, you may do so after the walk, by yourself.
You can get the registration form and all other details in this link

Designed as an invitation to “walk, taste, and listen as the lanes unfold their Nawabi memories,” the experience presented by Gatha will combine food tastings with storytelling, allowing participants to engage with the cultural context behind iconic recipes rather than viewing them in isolation.
Through this initiative, Gatha aims to position Zakaria Street not just as a food destination but as a living record of Kolkata’s culinary and social past, where every dish becomes a window into memory, community, and time.
