Salem: The 62nd graduation day of Thiagarajar Polytechnic College (TPT) was marked by grant of diplomas to 851 students, including 127 girl students. The polytechnic also awarded medals to 60 students securing top 5 positions in each of the 12 disciplines.
Congratulating the graduating diploma holders and alumni, Dr P Kolandaivel, former Vice Chancellor of the Periyar University exhorted them to pursue higher education while imbibing the latest technologies. He underscored the need for achieving excellence in their chosen field by working smart.
In his keynote address Veerabathara Swamy, Centre Head, Cameron, a Schlumberger company, urged the students to apply their knowledge and skills to solve myriad problems facing industry as well as individuals in the deep interiors of the country.
C Valliappa, Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions lauded the college principal, faculty and students for their array of accomplishments beyond academics adding that the students have made winning accolades a habit in a series of technical competitions, hackathons and software contests of AICTE or Government of Tamil Nadu.
Valliappa recalled how a pioneered step of allowing girl students to study at TPT in 1976 with a handful of students has grown to over 250 girl students on its rolls. Most of these students are winners of Pragati scholarship of Rs 50,000 per annum offered by AICTE.
In his graduation report TPT Principal Dr V Karthikeyan congratulated the graduating students as they transition from the world of study to the world of work. Continuous upgradation of knowledge and skills by over 100 faculty members at TPT helped them to guide their students to participate in research competitions and hackathons.
The multimedia ‘Heritage walk’ game created by a team of students was chosen for presentation to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions lauded the achievements of the College in terms of 871 placement offers for 465 students who opted for placement at improved salary levels.

According to Thyagu Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona Group of institutions TPT students won a prize at the International Fibre Wearable Tech Hackathon and earned a patent for ‘Pervious Pavers” taking the total number of patents by TPT to 54.
The polytechnic students also bagged Tamil Nadu Student Innovators Award 2021, Idea Spark Competition by IIT Madras, ISTE Best Student Awards 2021.
The polytechnic offers diplomas in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Textile technology, Computer Engineering, Architecture, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering in addition to programs in emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Robotics, Cloud Computing and Big Data, Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality, Micro Electronics, Precision Manufacturing, Construction Automation and Smart Agritech.
The college has made a name for itself by bagging a series of awards for overall performance, academics, green campus, innovation; and faculty and student participation in competitions from AICTE, CII, Government of Tamil Nadu, Union Ministry of Education’s ATAL Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievement and Hackathons. The college has 12 Centres of Excellence.
