Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday shared glimpses of Guwahati’s new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport, highlighting it as India’s first airport terminal designed around a nature theme.

Spread across nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, the state-of-the-art terminal has been designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually and is supported by extensive upgrades to the runway, airfield systems, aprons and taxiways.

PM Modi will undertake a two-day visit to Assam starting Saturday, during which he will conduct a walkthrough and inaugurate the new terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. He will also address the gathering on the occasion.

The redevelopment also includes major upgrades to runways, taxiways, and advanced airfield systems, aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger experience.

The new terminal is being seen as a key step in boosting regional connectivity and accelerating economic growth across the Northeast.

Billed as India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, the facility draws inspiration from Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage under the theme “Bamboo Orchids”.

The design makes pioneering use of around 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced Northeast bamboo and features Kaziranga-inspired green landscapes, traditional japi motifs, the iconic one-horned rhino symbol and 57 orchid-inspired columns reflecting the Kopou flower.

A distinctive “Sky Forest”, housing nearly one lakh plants of indigenous species, offers arriving passengers an immersive forest-like experience.

The new terminal also sets benchmarks in passenger convenience and digital innovation. Full-body scanners enable fast, non-intrusive security screening, while DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel, automated baggage handling systems, fast-track immigration and AI-driven airport operations ensure seamless, secure and efficient journeys.

As part of his Assam visit, the Prime Minister will also visit the Swahid Smarak Kshetra to pay homage to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement, a six-year-long people’s movement symbolising the collective resolve for a foreigner-free Assam and the protection of the state’s identity.

Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi will perform the Bhoomipujan of the new brownfield Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project at Namrup in Dibrugarh district, to be developed within the existing premises of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL).

With an estimated investment exceeding Rs 10,600 crore, the project is aimed at meeting the fertiliser requirements of Assam and neighbouring states, reducing import dependence, generating substantial employment and catalysing regional economic growth.

Aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of farmers’ welfare, the Namrup project is expected to emerge as a cornerstone of industrial revival in the Northeast, strengthening agricultural productivity while boosting the region’s economic and industrial ecosystem.
